A lot has been said about micromanagement and clear communication, so I am not going to go there again in this blog, the thing is however that not enough can be said about how to better lead your team to empower them to hit the bull’s eye more often, increase productivity and the overall morale.
One of the little things that you as the project manager/leader of your team can do is to include them in the big picture of the project or initiative.
Too many times a manager or leader tends to go at it alone and only trickle feeds information through to the team on an ad hoc basis as required, just enough so that there can be forward movement and the deadlines met, instead of including the team in the vision and goal of the client, the whole reason the project has been initiated and what the desired strategic outcome of the initiative is.
Looking at the former, isn’t that just another form of micromanagement, where instead of micromanaging tasks you now just trickle feed info through to the team effectively controlling the completion of tasks on a micro level?
Involve your team from the start, even if it is just key members of the team. Show them the big picture, explain to them what you envision, what the client requirements are and why this project or initiative has come about, but don’t just stop there, constantly update them on how they are tracking against the overarching goals from the client so that they can see for themselves what the impact of their contribution is.
Involve your team through every phase of the project, show them the big picture, share the goals and vision of the project or initiative and empower them to deliver more effectively instead of just using another form of micromanagement, and when the team fails then blame them for not delivering if you, the leader, did not give them the best chance to succeed.
