In the modern delivery environment, we need teams that are both committed to complete the task at hand as well as have the focus to see it through the difficult times and the easy times to reach the end goal on time and within budget.

However, this is a mixture that you as the manager must work hard at to get just right within your team as the wrong mix of commitment and focus might not have the desired outcome on your delivery to your client.

Let’s say your team has too much focus and not enough commitment. What you get in situations like these are teams that are very focused on the delivery of items but are not committed to the quality of the product or to deliver the product on time or within budget. What you have here is a team that will deliver on every single task with all the vigour of a dog chewing a bone, but time and quality comes second, which is not ideal.

Now let’s look at the other mix, a lot of commitment but not so much focus. In this scenario your team is so committed to delivering the product that they totally lack the focus and as such they jump around from one task to the next, but they just don’t really get going, and in the end your deadline suffers.  Even though in this scenario your quality could be very high purely because of the commitment to deliver.

So, as the manager it is your responsibility to work within your teams whether in a project environment or in a business sense – basically anywhere where you have people working towards a common outcome, to ensure that your teams deliver consistently.

Commitment and focus needs to be the one thing your team must have.  They require the commitment to complete the deliverables with the highest quality, but also the focus to meet the overarching deadlines, which in the end will then affect your bottom line positively overall, and you will have happy clients all around.

Therefore, commitment does not equal focus and vice versa, you need the right mix of both in your team if you are going to successfully deliver your product to your clients.
